Monarch Butterfly

The monarch butterfly, sometimes known simply as the monarch, is a member of the family Nymphalidae and feeds on milkweed. Milkweed, common tiger, wanderer, and black-veined brown are some of the other frequent names for this species. These names vary from place to region. Despite the fact that it is not a very efficient pollinator of milkweeds, it is among the most well-known of the butterflies native to North America and is considered an iconic pollinator.

Its wingspan ranges from 8.9 to 10.2 centimeters (312 to 4 inches), and they have a pattern that is immediately distinguishable as black, orange, and white.

A Müllerian copycat known as the viceroy butterfly has a color and pattern that is quite similar to the original, but it is much smaller and has an additional black stripe running across each of its hindwings.

The monarch population in eastern North America is well known for its yearly migration, which occurs throughout the late summer and early fall and travels southward from the northern and central United States and southern Canada to Florida and Mexico.

During every fall migration, monarch butterflies travel hundreds of miles and make a multigenerational return to their northern breeding grounds. The population of monarch butterflies that lives in western North America west of the Rocky Mountains typically migrates to overwintering grounds in southern California, but monarchs have also been discovered in Mexico.

On the International Space Station in 2009, monarch butterflies were hatched from pupae that were kept in the Commercial Generic Bioprocessing Apparatus. The monarchs were successfully released into the wild.
