Vincent van Gogh Irises Oil Painting

Irises is one of several paintings of irises by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, and it is one of a series of paintings he produced at the Saint Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, in the last year before he died in 1890. The asylum was located in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France.

Van Gogh began painting irises in the hospital garden in May 1889, less than a month after checking himself into the asylum. He painted them from life in the garden. There is not quite as much high tension as there is in his later works, which is disappointing. Because he believed that he might prevent himself from becoming insane by continuing to paint, he referred to his hobby as “the lightning conductor for my insanity.”

It is likely that Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints served as inspiration for the painting, as they did for many of his other works and for the works of other painters working during the same time period. Strong outlines, uncommon angles, including close-up views, and flattish local color are all characteristics that are shared by both of these images (not modeled according to the fall of light). The picture exudes a sense of gentleness and airiness throughout. Irises is a story that is full of life and free of tragedy.

However, Van Gogh’s brother Theo thought better of it and quickly submitted it to the annual exhibition of the Société des Artistes Independents in September 1889, together with Starry Night Over the Rhone. He considered this painting to be a study, which is probably why there are no known drawings for it. Concerning the show, he informed Vincent in a letter: “It captures the attention even from a distance. The Irises make for a lovely study that is brimming with air and energy.” The artwork is widely considered to be one of his best works.

Julien “Père” Tanguy, a paint grinder and art dealer, was the first owner of the property. Van Gogh painted three different versions of Tanguy’s portrait. In the year 1892, Tanguy sold his painting “Irises” to Octave Mirbeau, an art critic and anarchist who was also one of Van Gogh’s earliest followers. Mirbeau paid 300 francs for it.

In 1987, it broke the record for the most expensive painting that had ever been sold, and it continued to hold that title for another two and a half years. After then, it was sold to Alan Bond for the price of 53.9 million US dollars, but Bond did not have the funds necessary to purchase it. After that, in 1990, Irises was transferred to the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Irises is currently (as of the year 2022) ranked thirty-first on the list of the most expensive paintings that have ever been sold when the effects of inflation are taken into account, however it is only ranked 102nd when inflation is not taken into account.
