Zinnia Flowers

Zinnia is the name of a genus of plants that belong to the family Asteraceae and the tribe Heliantheae. Scrub and dry grassland are their natural habitats, and their range extends from the southwestern United States to South America, with Mexico serving as the primary location for genetic diversity. The members of this genus are easily identifiable by the singular, elongated blooms that bloom atop their long stems and come in a wide range of vivid hues. The name Johann Gottfried Zinn, a renowned German botanist, was chosen to commemorate the genus.

There are a few species of zinnias that are native to South America, but for the most part, zinnias are annuals, and shrubs found in North America. The vast majority of species have stems that are erect, while some have a more loose habit and have stems that stretch out and pile over the surface of the ground. In general, their height can range anywhere from 10 to 100 centimeters (4″ to 40″).

The leaves are opposite one another and typically lack stalks. The form of the leaves can range from linear to oval, and the color of the leaves can range from light to medium green. The composite blooms of zinnias are made up of ray florets that surround disk florets. The disk florets, which can be a different color than the ray florets and mature from the outside inward, are surrounded by ray florets. The petals of the flowers can be arranged in a single row or in a domed pattern, giving the blooms a variety of different looks. Zinnias come in a variety of colors, including white, chartreuse, yellow, orange, red, lilac, and purple.
