Vincent van Gogh Café Terrace at Night Oil Painting

Vincent van Gogh is responsible for the oil painting titled “Café Terrace at Night,” which was completed in 1888. It was originally titled Coffeehouse, in the evening (Café, le soir) when it was displayed for the first time in 1891. Today, it is also referred to as The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum.

In the middle of September in 1888, Van Gogh painted Café Terrace at Night when he was in Arles, France. Although there is no signature on the painting, the artist has described it and made a reference to it in three letters.

Visitors to the location can observe the artist at work in the north-eastern corner of the Place du Forum, which is also the location of the artist’s easel. In 1990 and 1991, the location underwent renovations to create an exact reproduction of a painting by van Gogh. He looked to the south, towards the terrace of the popular coffee house that had been artificially lit, as well as into the enforced darkness of the rue du Palais, which led up to a building structure, and beyond this structure, the tower of a former church that is now the Musée Lapidaire.

Van Gogh indicated a lit shop to the right of the canvas, as well as some branches of the trees that surrounded the area, but he left out the remnants of the Roman monuments that were directly beside the shop.

At the moment, you may see the painting in the Kroller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, which is located in the Netherlands.
